Waterfall Reconnaissance: First Drops in Crowsnest Pass

I’ve always believed that some of Alberta’s most breathtaking waterfalls are hidden right here in Crowsnest Pass. So, I set out on a little reconnaissance trip—a sampler to get a taste of what this region has to offer before diving in deeper. On this first adventure, I visited four stunning waterfalls that each offered something unique: Allison Creek FallsRainbow Falls via Miner’s Path, Star Creek Falls and Lundbreck Falls.

🌲 Allison Creek Falls

Nestled near the base of the Allison-Chinook recreation area, this waterfall is a quiet reward after a scenic forest walk. It’s lesser-known, which makes it feel like your own private discovery.

The trail is short and mellow, winding through lodgepole pines and the occasional wildflower bloom. The falls themselves spill over a rock face in multiple silky ribbons, framed by moss-covered boulders and tranquil pools. It’s a peaceful spot to unwind, take photos, or just let the sound of rushing water clear your head.

🥾 Rainbow Falls – Miner’s Path

History and nature collide on the Miner’s Path in Blairmore, a trail once used by coal miners walking to and from the mines. The walk is short, but it’s loaded with character: remnants of the past, a shady forest trail, and interpretive signs along the way. At the end of the path, you’re greeted by Rainbow Falls

A picturesque cascade spilling into a rocky creek bed. Depending on the light, the mist from the falls can catch the sun and throw up shimmering rainbows, true to its name. It’s an easy family-friendly hike with lots of charm.

🌟 Star Creek Falls

Star Creek Falls is a short but adventurous trail near Coleman that delivers a big reward for minimal effort. The trail offers two options: a scenic loop that takes you along the rim of a deep canyon for dramatic views of the waterfall from above, or a more rugged path that follows the creek upstream, crossing logs and rocks before reaching the base of the two falls.

There’s even a short chain-assisted scramble for an added thrill to the upper falls portion. It’s the perfect blend of accessibility and excitement, with stunning mountain backdrops and a secluded feel. Be cautious near the canyon edges—there are no railings—but the views are unforgettable. This one definitely earns its spot on the Crowsnest Pass waterfall checklist.

🌊 Lundbreck Falls

Though technically just outside Crowsnest Pass, Lundbreck Falls is too impressive not to include. This powerful double-drop waterfall is right off Highway 3, making it incredibly accessible but no less awe-inspiring. You can hear its roar before you even leave your car. There are upper and lower viewing areas, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can scramble down closer to the base to feel the spray on your face. It’s dramatic, dynamic, and photogenic—perfect for both casual visitors and serious photographers.

🏞️ Crowsnest Pass: More Than a Pit Stop

While the waterfalls are a major draw, Crowsnest Pass itself is worth exploring. This is a place where mountain life still feels authentic—no tourist traps, no crowds, just down-to-earth hospitality. You’ll find cozy cafes, local bakeries, antique shops, and remnants of Alberta’s mining heritage scattered throughout the towns. The Frank Slide Interpretive Centreis a must-visit, telling the story of one of Canada’s deadliest rockslides with gripping detail. And if you're into mountain biking or hiking, there are endless trails waiting for you.

📍 Final Thoughts

This trip was just the beginning. These four waterfalls have only scratched the surface of what Crowsnest Pass has to offer. With so many more tucked away in the valleys and forests of this region, I’m already planning my return. If you're looking for raw natural beauty, small-town charm, and a bit of history, Crowsnest Pass delivers in spades.

Stay tuned—there’s a lot more to explore.
